A little old lady in my book, “Detours,” walks up to the counter in McDonald’s and stares at the board above in great confusion. The person waiting on her struggles with patience. Has this ever happened to you? I have been both of those ladies. I don’t know why the menu board is so confusing. I go into a fast food place, usually knowing if I’m in the mood for a burger or chicken, and I can’t find it listed on the board. Then, for an added challenge, the board flips sooner than the time it takes me to read it! And if you say, “I want a hamburger,” they’ll say, “Which one?”

They promised us years ago that computers would make our lives simpler. When does that start? From my perspective, life isn’t simpler with computers but more complicated. Learning how to use a computer, your TV, or your phone is very complicated for those of us who were here before the age of computers began. It’s like the little girl who asked her grandpa, “What was it like living in the world when it was black and white?” I kind of like black and white. I kind of like knowing how to do things without having them upgraded. I think I kind of like not having so many choices. How about you?

One thing’s for sure: I’m so glad that the word of God never changes! The message of God’s love for us worthless earthlings has been the same since the beginning of time. The only thing that changes is where we are in life when we read the same passage. And yet, in the Bible, there is always reprimand when we don’t want it, comfort when we long for it, and joy when our souls respond, proving to us that no matter what detours we find ourselves on, Jesus is still the way.

Till next time,
Doris
